1/35 D9 Dozer

Postby Michael Rinaldi » Sat Jul 24, 2010 12:16 am

First, super happy to see this forum return...too much good work in here to be lost in net space.

Second, here is my latest...Varja's big resin CAT Armored D9 Dozer. Not for the feint of heart, regardless of positive online reviews. I went to town on the use of hair spray to replicate the many layers of heavily chipped paint on this one. It's been a long journey and am happy to see it crawl off the bench.

Best,

Mike
(sorry about the smaller photos, the forum window chops off my full-size ones!?)

It is hyper-realistic. I really like to see all those contrasts not just in colour and shade. But the variety in the worn off paint and comparison to the polished hydraulic pistons ! This is a very big model Mike I guess?

fantastic work of course!

You should become a hairdresser Mike! (Only judging by the way you handle that hairspray  )

That´s an awesome paintjob! Wow. I think you nailed it. A small vignette would be nice. What do you think?
Cheers

Hello Michael.

Perfect work. I like very much the differents colours to differents parts of the dozer. It seems a real dozer.

Congratulations.

Dear Mike
This is my all-time favorite from you so far. That second photo with the chipped yellow is very interesting.

Did you also use the hairspray for the chipping on the light grey areas such as the upper cab?

Again, congratulations. It’s very inspirational.

Wow Michael,

the master of HS returned. You made my day with this one!
I will spend the next hours holding my jaw and analyzing your paint job. 8O
Brilliant stuff!

BTW: are you coming to Europe this year. Would be fantastic to see one of your models in real life.

Cheers

May I ask for some close-up photos of the each of the finally coloured surface of this dozer? A close-up of the blade and wonderfully done polished metal with rusted dots would be much appreciated too :)

It is really well done, the Force is strong with You ;)

Hi guys,

Thanks for the kind words and am happy you all like it. It was a very long and involved project that took way longer than expected. Modern subjects can't (or I might say "shouldn't") be treated in the same manner as WWII armor, something looks off when that happens. So I had to try a different approach with this one. Fortunately, this dozer had lots of extreme weathering opportunities to explore such things.

Yes, all the chips for each color were achieved with HS layers, about 5 layers in total depending on the area. Each color was sprayed, then covered in HS, then chipped and sealed, and the process repeated for the next layer of paint. In fact, it was very straight forward, no real surprises and all the paints used were Tamiya because of the fine chipping qualities discussed in the HS thread here.

I'll be able to post more detail shots after it is published. I believe the Sept. issue of TMMI will have it.

Here is the main ref. photo used...

I cannot add anymore to what I already emailed you but wanted to say I enjoyed seeing the images again and thanks for the Sept. issue heads up. It's fantasmagrorical.

You were talking about how challenging it is to control hairspray chipping and it can be a hit or miss. So what did you do differently this time? It looks like you have perfect control over the process. 8)
