German Char B1 on the eastern front

Postby jagdpanzer » Mon May 31, 2010 10:55 am

Hey guys,

The move to my girlfriend forced me to take a break from my workbench.

Now I’m slowly getting ready to start working on my KV again (still electric power missing in my "war room", but should be done next week- hope so ;) ).
In the meantime I was able to finish the build of this French fellow.

The unique and old-fashioned look of the Char B1 bis made me start this kit a few months ago.
Being not able to use my airbrush at the moment I took the box from the shelf again and finished it.
In the meantime I also found a very unique picture of a whitwashed German B1 fighting on the eastern front.
Sadly the Trackstory book didn’t provide me with additional information about this tank, but I knew I had to built it!

I’ve used the Lion Roar set and some scratch build items to get modified look this beasts had during the eastern campaign.
Should be fun to play around with hairspray on all that flat panels.

But now back to my KV-1.

Hope you like it.

Greetings from Germany,
Manuel

Thanks guys!

Before I will leave for a 2 week trip to France (a visit in Samur is also planed) I want to show you some progress.

As I’m a lazy guy and endless chipping is not my cup of tea I used the HS technique to speed up things.
The whitewash will cover almost all the work anyway ;)

First a layer of dark brown to represent steal:

Some HS was applied- thanks to my girlfriend…

I mixed a cold and dark grey as base color:

Some light chipping, decals and a new layer of HS:

Followed by Tamiya White and some light scrubbing with an old brush:

Looks quite boring now, but this was just the beginning....
Now it's time for the part I like most,

Hope you like it!

The story continues.... :P

After my vacation I started to play around with Humbrols, here some in progress shots.

After a filter I continued with the first washes in dark brown and white.
Still a lot to come, the turret and the upper surface of the hull still need a lot of treatment.

Once the Humbrols got dry I discovered a shiny rim or border at some areas.
It’s really hard to notice, but I never had problems using them.
During my few years of modeling I have never used matt varnish, could this solve the issue?
The next steps will be: Finalize the chipping, some other filters and then mud and dirt.

Take care,
Manuel

what a bulky clunky tank ...

spped was too low also and as far as i know the design of the CHAR was never really sucessful!

anyway:

good work on that one - interesting to see the mix of the different materials you use!

looking forward to the further steps ...
