Ork Kans, Dreads and Mega-Dread

Postby Agatheron » Wed May 26, 2010 5:25 am

Well... I have a rather large project on the go... this thread will feature Ork models from the Warhammer 40,000 range. All are mechanical war-walkers of varying sizes.

So far, I've done pre-shading and the base coat on these. The idea is to give them a worn, rusted look, but that are still quite functional, if not deadly. In the Warhammer 40,000 universe, Ork vehicles and weaponry are often crude and ramshackle, but highly effective.

The smallest are the Killer Kans. These are plastic models, mounted on a 60mm base.

Next step up is the "Deff-Dred" -It will be also mounted on a 60mm base. The base is resin, the model is plastic.

Lastly is the much larger "Mega-Dread" which I am mounting on a 120mm base. Both base and model are resin. This is a Forgeworld kit.

I'm borrowing a technique from vsuarez666 at least in terms of doing the base coat for the rust. Sponging on different colours including yellow, orange, red and blue to give the rust patterns a more "mottled" look. I've only done the Mega-Dread so far. The Kans and Deffdred will be next.

The overall paint scheme will eventually be black with off-white accents. I am going to be using the hairspray technique on this over a few layers to hopefully get the kind of worn look I'm hoping for.

Feedback is most certainly welcome! I've used the hairspray technique before, but I'm going to be doing it over several layers.

I should mention that the large "Mega-Dread" is a model designed by Euromilitare winner Phil Stucinskas. Seems somewhat appropriate that I will be using hairspray techniques on this model :)

I have a couple updates... although not all that earth shattering. I have the mottling effect completed for the 3 Kans and the Deffdread:

I've since sealed these with Games Workshop's Purity Seal, and then two thick coats of hairspray. Will see how this turns out once I get paint on them.

I've done a bit more work... I've had a little bit of luck with the hairspray technique on the Kans... although I've not been brave enough to move to the Dread and Mega-Dread yet.

Here's a pic of the Kan on the right side from the above pictures after I sprayed it down with Codex Grey with some fortress grey highlights. This is after applying about 2 coats of purity seal, as well as two thick layers of hairspray and letting each layer dry. I wanted the layer fairly opaque. The idea is that the kans, while having some rust wear-and-tear, there's still a fair bit of grey-coloured metal underneath the paint.

And then after doing the removal.

I'll be sealing the model with future to lock in this wear-and-tear. I'll then be masking stuff off and then doing pretty much the same thing again, but using black as the top layer. Since I'm doing Goff clan, which is largely a black scheme, I wanted the wear and tear to show both grey metal and rusted metal.

I've done a reasonable amount of work on these ones so far. I have a few pictures of some in-between stages, but I'd like to just jump to where I'm at now :)

Now for some close-ups that show how the hairspray technique worked for some of the details... along with some preliminary rust.

I think I lucked out with the rust pattern on the faceplate. I'm going to let it dry fully before adding anything else... and even if I do, it will be a very light variation on some of the rust tones over the rest of the model.

Thanks... I've done the second layer of rust... which means pigments are next.

Here's a sample close-shot of the Mega-Dread, same angle as above:
